It is likely that ECT impairs balance and gait in some vulnerable patients. Conversely, its antidepressant effects can lead to a rapid improvement in mood, cognition, confidence, mobility, nutrition and hydration, all of which should lead to an improvement in balance and gait over a treatment course.

How long do effects of ECT last?

There is considerable variability in the trajectories, but most commonly there is progressive symptomatic improvement within the first week and complete remission within 3 to 4 weeks.
